31 Juillet 2011 – Belle entrée en matière pour cette dernière journée de festival : les sept joyeux barbus californiens d’EELS ont investi la scène, tels des blues brothers remasterisés! Costumes élégants des années 50, fine cravate et bérêt, leur guitare à la main, ils sont lancés dans un rock pop à faire danser la plus réluctante des mamies! Effet électrisant instantané. Mark Olivier Everett, E pour les intimes, est au micro et entend bien secouer le public avec son accent chantant du sud.
Le groupe enchaîne les morceaux, propose une palette rock riche, teintée de blues, de folk . E lance quelques blagues, présente ses musiciens tout aussi joueurs. Son trompettiste s’embarque avec entrain dans une Marseillaise. Oops. “On ne voudrait pas causer d’incident diplomatique, hein!” Et hop, le groupe se remet avec fougue, finit son set dans un rock à donner envie de taper dans ses mains, taper du pied et tourbillonner dans les airs!
Quelques instants plus tard, c’est à la rockeuse blonde décolorée du band suédois The Sounds de s’emparer du micro. Le groupe donne le ton avec un Dance with the Devil puissant aux influences clairement électro. La troupe entend bien se déchaîner et occupe la scène dans tous les sens, ça saute, ça scande. Maja Ivarsson, culotte noire et débardeur loose estampillé “Jus Liv” se donne, se baisse pour piquer une cigarette à l’un de ses fans du devant de la scène…euh mec t’as du feu aussi? Se lance dans un Living in America que le public reprend à pleins poumons!

L’ambiance monte encore d’un ton lorsque les vétérans du rap U.S font retentir les premiers beats de Dust. Cypress Hill est là, le public l’a bien compris tandis que le nuage de fumée grossit. Sen Dog et B-Real ont vieilli c’est certain mais leur musique semble déclencher des souvenirs ineffaçables, les paroles reviennent, les bras se lèvent en cadence sur un Shoot’em up à faire vibrer l’île. Les deux comparses reprennent leurs tubes old school, introduisent quelques nouveautés, font résonner les influences latines et reggae. Interlude à la mi-temps avec Julio G aux platines tout droit débarqué de Los Angeles, Eric Bobo aux percussions dans un rythme endiablé. Un moment évasif, le public en redemande. Il est servi.
Les premières notes d’Inside the brain arrivent aux oreilles, le public jubile. L’apothéose étant atteinte lorsque B-Real débarque sur scène avec un joint tellement énorme qu’il pourrait tourner pendant des heures…tout le monde l’a compris le fameux Hits from the bong s’apprête à déchaîner les foules. Oubliés les problèmes de sons du début de concert, les deux vieux de la vieille sont toujours en forme, même si le trip a priori jubilatoire de faire crier au public des méga “fuck you” laisse pantois (les mecs ont maintenant dépassé la quarantaine non?), Cypress Hill conserve ses lettres de noblesse. On aurait presque envie de remettre nos vieux tshirts aux feuilles de cannabis…ou pas!
Petite pause bien méritée à l’ombre des arbres avec Malajube en fond sonore. Pas vraiment convaincue. J’ai passé mon tour.
Pour revenir en courant aux premières notes de Beirut. Littéralement. C’est tout un orchestre que je trouve sur scène. Le son des guitares se mêle à la trompette, au tuba, à la batterie, au clavier, à l’accordéon, à la basse électrique, au banjo même. Un son d’une incroyable richesse. Le groupe est américain mais ses influences sont résolument balkaniques. Porté par un Zach Condon, en qui le musicien Goran Bregovic dit avoir trouvé un petit frère, le groupe mixe les genres, prend des accords à la musique libanaise, ajoute des rythmes d’origine tzigane, saupoudre le tout de consonances orientales, voire même directement puisées dans les chants traditionnels bretons.
Certaines chansons de Beirut semblent raconter le déchirement, le drame, la nostalgie. Sur d’autres, on entendrait presque quelques ressemblances avec les bandes originales des films d’Emir Kusturica ou dans un autre style de Yann Tiersen. Beirut e parfait musique de film donc, qui s’écoute en voiture lorsque l’imagination peut vaquer aux quatre coins de la terre. On en sort portés et rêveurs. La pression du début de journée retombe.

Sur l’une des petites scènes au fond de l’île, les anglais de White Lies commencent leur set. Souvent comparés aux Killers, Tears for fear ou Blondie, ils proposent un indie rock sombre et puissant, un brin nostalgique, quelques rythmes étant emprunts d’une légère touche d’électro qui suffisent à le rendre entraînant. Le concert s’écoute, sans toutefois vraiment s’emballer. Il faut attendre presque la fin pour se réveiller, avec le tant attendu To lose my life qui arrive enfin!
Retour vers les scènes principales…on attend patiemment que le concert de The Tragically Hip se termine. Je vous épargne la quantité de jeux de mots trouvés avec ce nom qui en dit malheureusement long. Le groupe raisonne comme décalé, ringard même. Les pieds battent la mesure, plus par réflexe que par réel entrain. Mais Gordon Downie se donne tellement que j’en suis presque touchée. Rien à faire, ça ne suffit pas.
Death Cab for Cutie…je répète Death Cab…LE concert rêvé et sagement patienté durant touuut le festival. Les premières notes déclenchent des cris irrépressibles autour de moi, longue introduction instrumentale, on s’impatiente. Le concert commence par I will possess your heart tiré de leur 7e album, jolie métaphore car une chose est sûre: le public est conquis. Ben Gibbard, suivi par ses compatriotes, chemises à carreaux et cheveux qui virevoltent en rythme, mène la danse. Et ce, malgré des problèmes techniques à répétition.
Une première guitare qui ne répond pas, le leader agacé la jette à terre, on lui en apporte une seconde, qui ne fonctionne toujours pas, il la jette également. Plus tard c’est au tour du micro de s’éteindre. Sur la scène d’à côté, on prépare déjà le prochain show, tests de musique, lumière. Rien de plus agaçant! Ben Gibbard demande d’ailleurs au mauvais esprit qui semble s’être installé de quitter la scène.
Obligé à interrompre le show, il s’excuse auprès du public “give us a second to fix this shit“, qui continue à frapper des mains en mesure d’encouragement. Conquis je vous dis, envers et contre tout. Le show reprend, Ben s’assoit sur le devant de la scène, échange avec ses fans de la première heure. Le groupe est à la hauteur.
Les chansons choisies sont plutôt rock, forcément. J’aurais toutefois aimé quelques morceaux plus nostalgiques comme Marching bands of Manhattan, Someday you will be loved, A Lack of colour ou même un Title and Registration...quelques gros classiques en somme! Heureusement, le concert s’est conclu sur The sound of setting, une belle façon de faire l’unanimité. 21h30. Fin du concert, avec comme une légère impression d’inachevé.
Dans un registre absolument diamétralement opposé, The Flaming Lips explosent. Confettis, ballons, la folie est au rendez-vous. Wayne Coyne arrive sur scène dans une bulle en plastique gonflable, il roule sur le public, lui marche dessus, s’allonge avant de regagner la scène. Du grand délire. Une horde de filles habillées en Dorothy tout droit échappées du Magicien d’Oz sautillent et frétillent sur la scène. Wayne annonce sa prochaine chanson, demande au public d’exploser, à son signal, comme s’il avait un fucking orgasm.
Derrière des images des Teletubies défilent. Difficile presque de prêter attention à la musique, sorte de rock psychédélique expérimentale, vague new age, avec des élans de peace and love attitude. Autour de moi on m’explique que cette musique n’est pas vraiment accessible, qu’il faut des années avant de se l’approprier. Je m’évade presque. Pas sûre de tenter l’expérience d’appropriation forcée.
Dernier coup d’oeil au fond de l’île, ne serait-ce que pour ne pas finir sur un goût osheagien amer. Je découvre une clairière transformés en party géant. L’imprononçable mais non moins excellent MSTRKRFT est aux platines. L’ambiance est toute aussi déjantée, voilà où se cachaient les fêtards! On plonge dans la foule pour ce mêler aux festivités, du pur son électro, de quoi exorciser ses tensions les plus enfouies et se lâcher tout le regain d’énergie soudainement apparu. Fin de festival. On rentre tels des zombies, prénoms oubliés, corps passés en mode automatique. Des musiques pleins la tête, un mélange bruyant de tous styles. Le bonheur. Mais quand au lieu de sortir sa clé on tente pendant quelques secondes d’ouvrir la porte de chez soi avec une carte de métro, c’est qu’il est grand temps de débrancher. Vivement l’année prochaine!
